Repairs

Brush With Kindness

A Brush with Kindness is a Phelps County Habitat for Humanity program that helps low-income homeowners with simple exterior repairs and accessibility improvements, including painting, landscaping, minor repairs, and wheelchair ramp construction. Aging, disabilities, and unexpected life circumstances can make home maintenance difficult, and this volunteer-driven program helps neighbors throughout Phelps County, Missouri live more safely and independently in their homes.

What We Do

We focus strictly on exterior health, safety, and accessibility improvements. Our volunteer teams can help with:

  • Safety & Accessibility: Installing wheelchair ramps, and handrails.
  • Minor Exterior Repairs: Fixing broken porch steps, replacing rotting deck boards, and minor exterior carpentry.
  • Exterior Preservation: Weatherization, light painting, and minor landscaping to help maintain city property codes.

> Please Note: This program does not cover major structural work, roof replacements, or interior remodeling.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for the program, you must meet our baseline criteria:

  • Location: The home must be located within Phelps County, Missouri.
  • Homeownership: You must be the legal owner of the home and actively live in it as your primary residence.
  • Need & Income: Priority is given to seniors (65+), veterans, and individuals with disabilities who fall within our low-income guidelines and are physically or financially unable to complete the repairs themselves.
  • Willingness to Partner & Sweat Equity: Habitat relies on a partnership with our homeowners. We ask that applicants be willing to invest a small amount of volunteer time, known as "sweat equity," into their project or the local Habitat affiliate.

💡 Accommodations Can Be Made: We fully understand that many of our A Brush with Kindness applicants face physical limitations. Do not let physical constraints stop you from applying! Reasonable accommodations are gladly made. Sweat equity can be completed through lighter tasks (like preparing water for volunteers or helping with paperwork), or can be completed on your behalf by friends, family members, or church groups.
